Winter 2006 Newsletter

Winter is hard on the skin.  Dry air and harsh wind can sap moisture from the skin, causing cracking, chapping, and irritation.  Even though it is not blazing hot, your skin is still vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.  Luckily, you can take action to minimize winter skin problems.  Here are some tips to help you keep your skin as youthful-looking and healthy as possible throughout the winter months:

 1.  Examine your skin-care regimen.  How do you take care of your skin?  After washing your hands do you make sure to dry them thoroughly?  How about your feet, do you make sure they are completely dry before putting socks and shoes on?  Do you wear sunscreen if you are going to be out for a long time in the sun?  Yes, you can still get burned in the winter sun.

 2.  Don’t take long, hot showers.  Even though they sound appealing, they strip skin of its natural moisturizing lipids.  Instead, take a short, warm shower; pat your skin almost dry, then put on Shea Healing Butter Cream (SHBC) while skin is still damp.

 3.  Humidify indoor air.  If you don’t have a humidifying system within your heating ducts, consider buying a humidifier.  These will help keep skin and nasal passages from drying out. (If you do experience dryness or minor bleeding in your nose, you can use SHBC (unscented) to soothe and moisturize the area.

If you develop severely dry skin, eczema or “winter itch”, use our SHBC to restore your skin to good health.

Remember that flexibility is key at this time of year.  Extremely irritated skin can crop up quite fast.  Keep some extra SHBC on hand to handle those problematic areas whenever necessary.

 LIP THERAPY

If you are planning on getting kissed during this time of year, better get those lips in shape now.  A maintenance approach is key here.  Don’t just soften them up and forget about them, pamper them throughout the winter season.  You’ll be happy you did.

Lip balms are great and have their place, but only to help prevent lips from drying out.  Waxes simply do not have the ability to rejuvenate or replenish lost moisture.  Use our SHBC on your lips to help moisturize your lips during the winter.  Wind and sun can really take it toll on your lips.

 HANDS AND FINGERS

Dry hands and cracking fingers are a huge concern this time of year, especially for anyone who contacts a lot of water or chemicals in their home or workplace.  Exposure to water actually dehydrates the skin as the air evaporates the bath water; it takes moisture from the skin along with it.  Seal your hands after gently patting them dry with a towel immediately!  The same applies for full body protection after bathing.  This simple practice goes a long way to preventing winter itch, something that is more likely to occur each year we get a little older.

Make sure you establish a barrier between you and cold, dry winter weather.  This is easily accomplished with the frequent uses of a good moisturizing cream. You need to use a cream as a lotion is quickly absorbed into the skin and there is nothing left on the surface to protect the skin.  Switch to our SHBC for this time of year! You’ll be glad you did.  Most people understandably do not like ointments as they leave behind a tacky, sticky texture, but they seal the skin well.  Try a cream like SHBC for hand protection.  Keep some at your workplace, some at home by the kitchen as well as the bathroom sink.  You’ll find yourself more likely to use it if you don’t have to hunt for it.  And by all means, apply it frequently.

 FINGERNAILS

Keep nails moist to prevent brittleness.  Minimize water exposure as much as possible.  Wear protective gloves when washing dishes.  The use of SHBC Therapy rubbed onto the nail plate as well as the cuticle area whenever you like, preferable at least twice a day during trouble times can help your nails and cuticle.  Taking calcium supplements according to package direction will help in insuring your nails are healthy and hard.

 CHEEKS AND NOSE

Instead of using Vaseline on your nose and cheeks, use SHBC.  It is good protection against high winds.  You can also use SHBC (unscented) to moisturize your lips.  Our SHBC is a good product for moisturizing your skin.  Its high content of Shea butter protects skin from sun damage in addition to keeping it moist.  Experts suggest applying moisturizer after your shower while your skin still is holding some water.  The moisturizer seals in the water.

When the humidity is less than 50 percent, experts say apply moisturizer two or three times throughout the day.

Our product is 100 percent all natural.  There are no preservatives or fillers.
